Debunking Lawn Care Myths

For many years, power raking and chemical fertilizers were the go-to lawn service during the spring, though this may be doing more harm than good for your yard.

Myth #1: Power raking has been a standard practice for years, and while this method of thatch removal can increase air flow to the roots and promote growth, this requires removing a substantial portion of the healthy turf. This process can also be very damaging to tender young roots as they prepare for spring.

Aerating accomplishes the same benefits as power raking plus more, leaving visible results without harsh damage. According to lawn care specialists from Colorado State University Extension, “[Aeration] is more beneficial than power raking. It helps improve the root zone by relieving soil compaction while controlling thatch accumulation. Soil compaction, in fact, is one factor that contributes to thatch buildup.”

Myth #2: Many people turn to national brand fertilizers when looking to nourish their lawn with the expectation that this will cultivate healthy and green grass. While these products may green up yards faster, they rely on chemicals and fail to do anything for the overall well-being of the lawn and soil. They are also more damaging to the environment. Fiske Brothers Yardworks uses local, organic fertilizers which are designed specifically for Colorado lawns in order to provide lasting benefits.

Myth #3: When unwanted visitors start to interfere with a beautiful lawn, pest control is often thought to be the answer. Weed control actually makes it more difficult for the lawn to grow and can cause damage to plants and trees in the surrounding areas. If weed control becomes necessary, Fiske Brothers Yardworks will only apply the product to specific areas rather than the entire yard. In addition to harming vegetation, insect control will also kill beneficial bugs that play an essential role in the ecosystem, and Fiske Brothers Yardworks believes it is best to let these creatures thrive.

While each season offers its own unique challenges and opportunities, yard care is evolving with a greater understanding of the environment and lawn composition, emphasizing the value of soil, roots and other factors beyond the surface. Fiske Brothers Yardworks hopes this knowledge will encourage customers to seek productive and efficient methods, all with the reward of a thriving lawn.

“Trust people who are in the field and have a background in lawn care,” co-owner and yard care enthusiast Tim Fiske said. “It’s important to consider the health of your lawn and how you can make the best decisions moving forward.”
